Lip service meaning: an insincere service which was expressed with the lips but never put into practice.

The expression ?lip service? refers to a service or support that has been promised, but never actually delivered. It can also mean a dishonest opinion, approval, expression of friendship, admiration, and so on. It seems like this expression was first used somewhere between 1635 and 1645.

Origins of the ?Lip Service? Idiom

Some theories state that the following bible verse led to the creation of this idiom:

??This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.? – Matthew 15:8

In time, the expression also lead to the term ?lip server? which refers to the person doing the lip service, or the insincere service, statement, etc.
